Sale Catalogue for the contents of Bury Knowle House, 1899

The bankruptcy and flight to Switzerland of the novelist Mrs Adeline Kingscote, who lived with her husband Colonel Howard Kingscote and their three children at Bury Knowle House from 1895 to 1899, meant that every item in that house, no matter how trivial, came under the hammer in June 1899.

Their sale catalogue reveals what the 25+ rooms of the house (including the large brick extension at the back) were used for at the end of the nineteenth century. It also gives a wonderful snapshot of the kind of possessions an extravagant upper-class woman would like to have around her, as well as of the more mundane equipment needed to keep a house going. There were about 1200 lots for sale.
