New Marston: 1881 census

Inscription in William Street

Right
: Inscription on “Asurea Villa” (or Blue Villa), now 30 William Street. The date is 1877, and this is believed to be the oldest house in the road.

Two other houses in William Street are helpfully inscribed with dates, but were not there at the time of the 1881 census:

  • South View Cottage (49 William Street) with March 1888,
    and the initials CC/SC/EMC;
  • Portway House (51 William Street) with April 1889
    and the initials TC/ABC/JC.

New Marston was extremely small at the time of the 1881 census. The part of the Marston Road running from St Clement’s to the King’s Mill Lane/Cuckoo Lane junction was (and is) in St Clement’s parish. “New Marston” was a small area to the north and in 1881 had only 19 houses occupied houses:

  • The west side of the Marston Road and the roads off it were in the parish of St Nicholas’s Church, Marston, and the area was known as “Marston Garden”. There were thirteen occupied houses listed there in 1881 (four in Edgeway Road and nine in Ferry Road, including the old Somerset pub). Fourteen more houses were in the process of being built or waiting to be occupied.
  • The east side of the Marston Road and the roads off it were in the parish of St Andrew’s Church, Headington (and remained so until 1963), and so were originally considered to be part of Headington rather than Marston. There were only six houses listed here in 1881. William Street was laid out but had only its first two houses built; and the other four houses were the more humble Tileworth Cottages adjacent to the brickworks at the north-west end of Jack Straw’s Lane.
